RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT
Once you start self-taping, you will need to start with some equipment. I have listed some items below with my Amazon affiliate links to make things easier (I may receive a small percentage of the sale if you buy from the links).
You do not need to use these exact options and you can choose to buy the equipment from any shop–but these are here so you can compare. Always read reviews and compare to ensure you’re getting the best prices.
If you’re starting brand new, a ring light with phone holder combo is going to be the best thing for you–or if you have a tight space to work with. This one is great because it extends up to 6 feet and it has different colour modes. No, you likely won’t need to red or green light, but being able to go from a cooler tone to a warmer tone can help you set the mood in your space. Even if you decide to upgrade to soft boxes later, you can still keep this for when you travel.
If you want to work with natural lighting, or already have some other lighting options, then getting a tall tripod is all you’ll need. I’m not that tall, but still find it helpful to have one that extends past 5 feet. This one extends up to 5’11” which is great for most folks.
Now, if you have the space–I highly recommend soft box lighting. This set it great for it’s dimmable lighting with remote control–plus it has a carrying case, in case you need to take it on location with you somewhere, or just need to tuck it away.

You’ll need a plain and neutral backdrop. You do not need to invest in a fancy backdrop, if you have a blank wall you could paint–that would be my first choice. You could also hit up a second hand store and buy an old bedsheet, wash and iron it and pin it up. But, if you want something large enough to do a full body slate with–this is the backdrop for you.
